Albert and Mitzi Ekekhor

First-person accounts from off the beaten track, as told to Anne Ford

“I am always talking in my taxi, telling people the good news about Jesus. I don’t debate religion. I say, ‘If you want to know what it’s like to be a Christian, I can tell you.’ A few people have confessed Jesus as their savior while they are sitting in my taxi.

“As far as being a Christian is concerned, the only thing is to love people no matter where they are. There was a Jewish man who entered my taxi. He asked me where am I from. I told him I’m from Nigeria. I told him I’m a Christian. He said, ‘Oh, I’m Jewish.’ I said, ‘You are my brother, you know that? Because Jesus was a Jew.’

“I was born again after I came to the United States in 1984. Even then, I was living a half-and-half life. You living as a Christian, but you doing all the things you got no business doing. I did that until one day a Nigerian pastor that came here said to me, ‘I need to ordain you as a pastor.’

One day, I went to the Lord in prayer. I asked God, ‘Did you actually call me to be a pastor? Did you give me my wife, who has an incredible voice, to complement the ministry you have given me? If that is the case, I want you to prove it to me.’

I went to bed, and as I was sleeping, I started to hear music playing into my brain. I picked up my tape recorder, and I recorded it. This is how we came about recording the CD for my wife, Mitzi Ekekhor. It is called I Have Come to Worship. Also, I preach on the television, on the Total Living Network, and I am writing a book. And we are going to be opening a ministry at a hotel downtown. Our website is

God has called me to add value to the lives of believers. He has instructed me that every church I build, I should have parking spaces in those churches, and every member of my church needs to have cars in those spaces, because I need to set them free from the bondage of parking tickets. And since I drive a taxi, the Lord said, ‘I have instructed you to buy 100 taxi medallions that will be owned by the church. Every man and every woman that is serving the Lord faithfully will be assigned a medallion.’

“I do not like the instability in the corporate world. I believe it’s very unfair for people to be working for a corporation and living in fear constantly. This is leading to heart attack, this is leading to all kinds of diseases in their life, because they are constantly under pressure. I think that this is not the way for a man to live. Everybody cannot be a trillionaire. Let us all try and live a decent life.”
