First-person accounts from off the beaten track, as told to Anne Ford
“I always knew I wanted to do hair. I worked at a salon in the city till about 2002, but I got too old, ’cause it’s a very young environment. Now I work out of my home, which is illegal. If I got caught, I would lose my house, ’cause I couldn’t make as much money if I worked in a salon. But my neighbors all come to get their hair done, so I don’t worry too much.
“I’m definitely psychic. I’ll look at someone’s astrological chart, and that gives my conscious mind something to do, and then the psychic stuff will come through. I know when it’s my mind and when it’s something else popping through. It feels like when you’re watching TV and there’s a storm report that comes along the bottom. There’s a feeling in my body, just a real confident feeling, and I know that it’s true.
“A lot of times when I’m doing people’s hair, they’ll say, “This and this is going on,” and I’ll stop and look up their chart and say, ‘Well, this is probably going to happen.’ One of my clients was going on vacation to Africa. She said, ‘Could you look at my chart and see if everything’s going to go OK?’
“I said, ‘I think you’re going to meet somebody in Africa and move there, and by the way, you owe somebody money.’ Two weeks before she leaves, she calls me and says, ‘Oh my God, the accountant made an error on my taxes, and I owe the IRS.’ And she lives in South Africa now. She met somebody on her safari.
“When I do hair, it’s the same thing. I can’t use my logical mind. I have to just lose myself and tune into the psychic energy or whatever you want to call it. I wait for it to just come to me, what I’m supposed to do. I don’t use pictures. I don’t show them color swatches. People say, ‘How did you know what I was thinking?’
“One time I had a client who was pregnant and wasn’t telling anybody. I looked at her and said, ‘Are you pregnant?’ Just little stuff like that. They’ll say, ‘You’re a witch!’ or they’ll call me up later and say, ‘What you told me happened.’ When I do tell people things like that, I’m kind of in another consciousness, so I don’t remember saying them.
“I’ve had alien abduction experiences all my life, although they did stop about eight years ago. When I was a kid, I used to look out the window and think, ‘Why did they leave me here?’ As I got older, I got more and more frightened of it. One UFO group I go to, the woman who’s the head of it is a therapist, but she doesn’t want anybody to know she runs this group, because it would affect her professionally. That’s the good thing about being a hairdresser—they expect you to be flaky.”
