Allow me to cast some doubt on Peter Margasak’s opinion (March 15) that “there’s little doubt that Tony Bennett is the greatest living pop singer.” Has Margasak heard of Mel Torme or Rosemary Clooney? How about Vic Damone, who Sinatra once said “has the best pipes in the business,” and who can still sing Bennett under the table–as can others too numerous to mention. Margasak’s statement should read, “There is little doubt that Tony Bennett, thanks to some good fortune, is perhaps this country’s best-known living pop singer.” But the greatest? He doesn’t even come close. Never has, either.
