To the editors:
It is impossible to understand how a man so sensitive to the lives of children that he could write a classic on the role of fairy tales in a child’s psychological development–yet actually be a sadistic monster.
That is one’s dilemma after reading the poignant letter (Reader, Apr. 6) from Name Withheld about Bruno Bettelheim.
The letter is totally convincing. It bears no taint of being based on hearsay or vindictiveness. The writer seems to have no selfish motive, only to relieve his (or her) terrible anguish.
The writer seems to wish only to establish the truth about Bruno Bettelheim, about his presumed Jekyll-Hyde existence.
One hopes that other readers will come forward to accuse or defend that saint or sinner, Bruno Bettelheim.
