Mary Jo Clark’s story in the 9/17 issue struck a chord with me. My mother died when I was in eighth grade and the nuns didn’t even know she was sick–because I had not told them. What in the world makes her think the priest reported to them on his sick calls? How many men does she know who would have been thoughtful enough to realize the children’s teachers should be told? There are some, but they are rare. A woman probably would make that connection. As a teacher, I know how children assume adults are omniscient and blame them for not acting on the knowledge they don’t even have. Mary Jo Clark is old enough to know better.
