Captured at List: Bisexual Activists’ Discussion List
Subject: A new twist of censorship I just had to share this with someone. I am visually disabled and use material recorded on tape by Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic. Well, I have been trying to get this book called How Do I Look? Queer Film and Video recorded. RFBD has sent it back twice saying that none of their volunteers wanted to read it. I thought this was really strange given I have sent them a lot of queer books and none have ever been returned before. So I called the book assignment person and asked her why no one would record the book. She said, “Dawn, did you look at the pictures?” A funny question for a visually disabled person, I think. No, I had not. It turns out that the book contains photos by Mapplethorpe and other sexually explicit photos of gay men. This is not a pornographic book, but a scholarly one about representation of queers in film and video. Anyway, because of the pictures, none of the readers will volunteer for the book. You see, when they read a book, they have to describe any charts or photos in the book and no one wants to do so. So if you know anyone willing to volunteer to read the book for Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic, please put them in contact with me. This is an odd world we live in…
