I wasn’t impressed with Andrew Marin’s “disapprove of the sin but love and don’t, at least not overtly, judge and try to convert the sinner” compromise to “bridge the gap” between gays and Christian fundamentalists [“His God Doesn’t Hate Fags,” August 18]. This is a slightly watered-down version of the condescending “love the sinner but not the sin” position that “kinder and gentler” fundamentalists have adopted. I’m curious about why some gays want to go down this road. It seems masochistic to try to connect with and/or seek approval from puritanical religious groups that (to put it mildly) disapprove of what you are, not to mention the “strict, evangelical” (puritanical) version of Christianity which some gays, according to Marin, find “rewarding enough that they’re willing to concede that their sexuality might be sinful.” Maybe it’s some kind of S&M thing. (Hey, I’m just a breeder–what do I know about the workings of the gay mind?) Or is it part of a new make-peace-with-your-inner-puritan therapy exercise for gays? On next week’s show we’ll see Jews and blacks trying to “build a bridge” to Aryan groups in order to get in touch with their inner Nazis.

You don’t have to be a Bible scholar to see who’s being “theologically sloppy” (as Marin says it is not to interpret homosexuality as a sin, according to the Bible). All you have to do is pick up a Bible and turn to Leviticus 20:13, the ancient Hebrew law against homosexuality. It says that gays must be put to death too. Therefore, to be consistently and not selectively literal in their interpretation of Bible verses, fundamentalists would have to advocate the death penalty for gays, not to mention stoning to death mediums and priests’ daughters who become prostitutes. In the several pages surrounding the verse on homosexuality (and in the entire Bible, for that matter) there’s plenty of stuff that fundamentalists don’t take literally. These are laws of an ancient culture, and to be as consistently literal on the Bible as they claim to be, Christian fundamentalists need to start working for the collapse of modern, democratic civilization in order to create a replicate of the ancient theocratic society of biblical times where they can reenact all of the old laws and penalties. This is essentially the kind of theocracy that their puritan brothers, the Taliban, installed in Afghanistan, where you heard about things like women being stoned to death for adultery.
