To the editors:
I am writing in response to the article published on November 5 in your “Neighborhood News” section. I am a member of the Board of Directors of Amnesty International USA, and I am extremely familiar with the details of the Toni Moore case.
As a South African who has been imprisoned for campaigning against racism, I am disturbed that allegations of racism would be made and used so freely by a disappointed applicant for promotion within a human rights organization like Amnesty International. There is no question in my mind that the person who was hired for the position was the most qualified applicant.
Amnesty International USA is better than any other human rights organization I know with respect to the efforts that have been made to promote cultural diversification at all levels of the organization. The staff is 39 percent minority, and the top management team of three includes two women, one Latina and one woman of color.
Your article does a great injustice to Marj Byler, who has done so much to diversify the composition of Amnesty International USA, and who in my opinion is one of the best managers and most capable human rights activists in the organization.
