Thank you for publishing last week [March 28] the letter from Effie Mihopoulos regarding Neal Pollack’s “Everybody Shut Up!” article [February 28]. Effie brilliantly illustrated Pollack’s point that all poets need to shut up. Now.

Sincere, well-meaning odes regarding the war probably cannot help being banal drivel. Great art about the present war, if any is to be created, is no doubt years away. Actual knowledge of what is happening and the perspective of time are necessary to allow anyone to make sense of war, and Pollack was dead-on regarding this point.
