To the editors:
Your January 3, 1992, article on “A Silenced Woman” was outstanding. On page 19 you quoted a 20th century Vatican source that said Jesus Christ didn’t call any woman to be an apostle. It wouldn’t surprise me a bit to find out that there were many woman apostles, and many more male disciples than the 12 acknowledged in today’s Bible. Also, when great religious leaders die, they usually die with their most devoted followers at their sides. Who was with Jesus when he died? Women. Who did he first appear to when he had risen from the dead? A woman. It makes you wonder–were women disciples edited out, or worse, by their fellow disciples?
