They’ll be dressing goats in jockey shorts and riding wild steers in drag at the Illinois Gay Rodeo Association’s Windy City Rodeo 2000. The serious events include barrel racing, bareback bronc riding, bull riding, and calf roping on foot. Cowboys and cowgirls from across the country will compete in 13 events each day, with proceeds going to four Chicago-area charities and winners jockeying for cash prizes, awards, and a place at an international competition to be held this fall in Albuquerque. The festivities begin with a pool party and barbecue at 2 PM Friday, August 25, at the Days Inn, 17356 S. Torrence in Lansing. Registration for rodeo contestants and volunteers will be held there from 6 PM to 9 PM the same day, followed by a welcome party. The rodeo itself runs from noon to 6 PM Saturday, August 26, and Sunday, August 27, in the open-air arena at Sundown Stables, 22230 S. Cottage Grove in Steger. In most events men compete against men, women against women. The stable’s also the place to lasso some fancy duds, chow down, and practice the old do-si-do. Admission to the rodeo is $15 each day; a weekend pass is $25. Parking and all other events are free. Call 312-618-9063 for more information or check out www.ilgra.com.
