I was very excited to see “The Politics of Braids” [September 8]. I am a loc wearer and my loctician is a member of the American Hairbraiders and Natural Haircare Association. It sounds like one of the arguments is paying attention to the scalp. One of the reasons I have stayed with Arlanda is because she not only retightens my hair, she also cares and has a vast knowledge about the changes of my scalp and the feel of my hair.
If the state is so gung ho on protecting its residents by forcing this training why don’t they limit the training to what a “natural haircare loctician” provides as services?
Also, what about the toxic chemicals a customer is inhaling from the perm kits and the bodily damage that can happen by the hot comb (burnt ears and forehead)?
