Dear editor,

Reading about poet Joffre Stewart’s arrest for trespassing [Neighborhood News, July 8], I thought you might be interested to know about the signs saying “This area is being watched” in the African American section of Barnes & Noble’s Diversey store. These signs don’t seem to appear anywhere else in the store–not, say, among the magazines or genre paperbacks, areas I might expect to be of some interest to shoplifters.

I filled out one of Barnes & Noble’s preaddressed comment forms about five weeks ago, expressing my outrage at the implication behind these signs. I’m still awaiting a reply.
