To the editors:
I found it strange that Dennis Polkow wrote in his review of The Rake’s Progress [April 6] that Stravinsky’s opera had its Chicago premiere last month, when in fact the Lyric Opera School presented it in (I believe) 1976 at the Civic Theatre. Winifred Brown sang the evening we attended, and Kathy Kuhlmann made her memorable debut. Both these young women have since made their marks in the opera world.
Perhaps Mr. Polkow should attempt to do his homework more thoroughly before committing his words to print.

I was aware of the production you mentioned–which was in 1976–but generally don’t consider student productions of such important works worthy of the designation “premiere.”
