I set out to photograph women whose primary job is taking care of their homes and families, or who fit my mother’s description of herself, “retired homemaker.” I couldn’t find anyone else who calls herself a homemaker. And housewife? Don’t even think about it. But I did find stay-at-home moms, artists in limbo, a “volunteer for America,” businesswomen, caterers, drivers, part-time writers. In this job, they told me, you work 24 hours, seven days a week, and you are totally responsible for what goes on here. I guess that’s why one of my subjects calls herself CEO.
