To the editors:
The John Conroy story on minimum security at the federal correctional camp near Portage, Wisconsin, in the October 7th Reader strikes me as holding great promise for the future. Those who can handle responsibility get their chance and the taxpayer saves money.
I see some of the shortcomings owed to the limited capacity of the camp, 104. I’ll wager were the federal government to increase the camp’s capacity five-fold it could easily be filled by suitable inmates from the 50 states, and at a profit to the prison administration, the cost of the prisoners’ stay being met by the states; and transform prison practices in the direction of responsibility to the benefit of the next and all subsequent generations.
