The other day I was walking west down Superior past Holy Name Cathedral. A man sitting on the church steps called out to a boy in a Bulls jacket walking about 20 feet in front of me. “Excuse me, sir,” he said, “can I borrow a couple hundred dollars? I’d like to go to Vegas–see the girls, gamble a little, and maybe even win lotsa money.”

The boy shrugged his shoulders and kept on going.

The man asked, “How old are you? About 11?” There was no response from the boy.

Looking at me, he said, “Kids these days…you can’t count on them for nothing.”
