To the editors:

Perhaps you would like to print some of the following quotations from some of the Catholic Church’s holiest and most venerable saints, popes, etc, to authoritatively counter the “pius” heat you will undoubtedly take for publishing Jason Berry’s article “The Sins of the Fathers” [May 24] that actually only exposed the tiny tip of the huge iceberg.

“It is better that the truth be known rather than the scandal be covered up.” –Saint Augustine

“It is better that scandal arise than that the truth be concealed.” –Saint Gregory the Great

“Not to oppose error is to approve it; and not to defend truth is to suppress it.” –Pope Saint Felix III

“If the Faith is in imminent peril, prelates ought to be accused by their subjects, even in public.” –Saint Thomas Aquinas

“Rebuke them sharply that they may be sound in faith.” –Titus 1:13

“The greatest obstacle in the apostolate of the Church is the timidity, or rather the cowardice, of the faithful.” –Pope Saint Pius X
