[Re: News of the Weird, March 19]

C’mon, Shawn,

Did you really have to use the grossest form of ethnic caricature to illustrate the story about people throwing bags of poop onto North Dakota highways? The blanket, the headband, the braids, the fringed leggings would have gotten across the point that it’s an Indian. And the tear is a nice play on the 70s TV antilitter ad. But the giant hooked schnozz? Embarrassing. Would you illustrate a black person with grotesquely oversize lips?

And Chuck, you or your editor should have caught this before it went to press. Obviously the subject matter of your column focuses on the grotesque, but this drawing could have been revised so as not to have been patently offensive.

Your loyal readers would appreciate better judgment being used in the future.
