To the editors:
Mr. Elliott’s letter [February 7] was a colorful account of the amazing exploits of General Forrest. A few details, however, were left out: 1. General Forrest’s occupation, before joining the Confederate Army at 40, and the source of the wealth he so generously gave away, was slave dealing. 2. Troops under the command of Forrest committed the infamous Fort Pillow Massacre. On April 12, 1864, men of the 11th U.S. Colored, who had already surrendered, were shot down by Rebel troops shouting “Kill All The Niggers.” 3. Forrest was a founding member, and the Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. Nathan Bedford Forrest–a hero for our time.
