To the editors:

I have been trying to understand the subtle reasoning behind your inclusion of a glossy advertising insert for Camel cigarette paraphernalia in the issue that began with the insightful cover story “Let’s Ban Smoking Outright” [March 18]. Perhaps you were trying to subliminally show that even though Patrick Griffin’s reasons for banning smoking were logical and well thought out, smoking will never be banned due to the money and advertising clout of tobacco companies. Or perhaps you commissioned Griffin’s article to counteract the disdainful reaction of your (majority nonsmoking) reading public who will know that the Reader will sell out for a price.

If Mr. Griffin ever decides to run for office on the “ban smoking” plank, he certainly will have my vote. I assume that R.J. Reynolds will have yours.
