To the editors:

I would like to take exception to the way that the Catholic Church is characterized in your May 7 issue [Calendar]. I am a Catholic feminist, a graduate of a seminary, a member of a parish staff, and like most women in my position, could talk for hours, if not days, about the ways that the church systematically discriminates against women. Even if I do not choose to take the path followed by Chicago Catholic Women, I can often see their point. But, to compare John Paul II and the modern church with David Koresh and the Branch Davidians is irresponsible and offensive. I am rarely seen as an apologist for the Pope, but if I was offended, I can’t imagine what other people thought.

There is much room and need for valid criticism of the church. Comments like this one are neither witty nor constructive.
