To the editors:

I heartily enjoyed (and agreed with) Ted Shen’s June 12 review of the Chicago Symphony (“Echoes of a Distant Past”). It was great to read an accurate assessment of the orchestra by someone other than the perennial boosters/lapdogs at the Tribune and Sun-Times. As a musician and concert subscriber, it has been disheartening to hear the orchestra’s declining standards during the past few years. The hype continues unabated, however, needed now more than ever. The appointment of Daniel Barenboim, who is even more overrated than the demigod Sir Georg, will not improve matters. The lesser paid members of the Cleveland Orchestra (Saturdays at 8 PM, 98.7 WFMT-FM) offer a much more musical alternative to Saturday evenings at Orchestra Hall.
