To the editors:
Regarding the article “Wood If He Could” by Adam Langer [May 15].
To pay proper tribute to Tyner White’s mission, perhaps you might have highlighted his quote: “Let’s train users of items to think of them as permanent.” He’s right that we need to teach ourselves to reuse instead of throw out–that we’ve “been trained to stay away from anything that’s used.” In the schools I work in, children take their notes on ecology with disposable pens, after eating the school lunch off of Styrofoam tray-plates and bowls with plastic cutlery and juice cups. Everything’s fine as long as they throw it in the trash when they’re done. Perhaps we just don’t like someone like Tyner White bringing back that “trash” to haunt us.
