To the editors:

I have taken offense to the way in which Michael Miner refers to Where Magazine in his story “What’s Going On at Inside Chicago” [Hot Type, July 7]. He states, “Loeser, who had been dying on the vine at a little tourist sheet called Where.”

Allow me to tell you why Where is not a “little tourist sheet,” thus sharing with you our actual position as a respectable, successful and major magazine publisher.

Where is a city magazine for visitors. Where’s affluent readers are temporary city dwellers occupying the rooms of fine hotels.

Where is a chain of magazines, published in four countries–U.S.A., Canada, Australia and England. In the United States, Where is published in eleven cities; Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, Phoenix, St. Louis, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Virgin Islands and Washington, D.C. with a total U.S. monthly circulation of 750,000 and an annual readership of almost 25,000,000. In Chicago alone the circulation is 100,000 monthly.

The Where chain in Canada, the U.S. and England is owned by Key Publishers in Canada, the third largest communications company in the country.

Where is BPA audited and a part of the Simmons Readership Study.

The editorial in Where is “real editorial” designed to serve the visitors’ needs. We give our readers reliable, current, authoritative and credible information on what’s happening in the city they are visiting.

As you can see from the enclosed issues of Where Chicago, New York and Washington, we are no “little sheet.”

Without a doubt, you too would take offense to being called a “little sheet.” We are justly proud of the magazines we publish and would appreciate a retraction of this misleading and inappropriate description.
