“UPI RIP” [Hot Type, May 16]

That headline evokes the idea that something of value is lost. But it’s hard to understand that headline given your article. It says nothing about the great, storied history, traditions, and personalities of UPI. (Disclosure: Billy Ferguson is my friend of 30 years and was my UPI boss for several years in the 1970s.) You instead focused on the miserable years of its decline.

Too bad you didn’t give your readers a hint of Ferguson’s achievement in delivering a lively account of a once great news organization, its journalistic accomplishments and the many talented, hardworking, colorful Unipressers who labored in its network of bureaus. UPI provided an opportunity for young journalists to cover the big stories in an incredibly competitive and rewarding environment. It was that which makes UPI a place golden in the memories of so many of us who worked for it.
