Nice piece on the chess pavilion [“Hot Times at the Chess Pavilion” by Ted Cox, July 27]. You and I are working the same side of the street: raychess.blogspot.com/2007/07/chess-on-lakefront.html.
Don’t feel badly about losing to Ron [Washingon]; he’s officially a chess “expert” as defined by the US Chess Federation, by virtue of having a rating over 2000. That puts him one notch down from a master, which requires a 2200 rating.
BTW, I wonder if this is the first guy you played: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1430/537905824_99dd64deab.jpg?v=0. That’s Aleksandar Stamnov, and he is a master.

Ted Cox replies:
Stamnov is indeed the guy I first played. Woof, now I don’t feel so bad.
