The Morton Salt company (originally named Wheeler & Co.) was founded in Chicago in 1848, and while it’s now owned by the German firm K+S Group, its distribution facility at 1357 N. Elston still receives salt shipments by barge. The white shed with the company name written on it in dark blue letters and the iconic “umbrella girl” logo is a Chicago landmark, visible from the Kennedy expressway as well as from Elston. Random fact: the company’s founder was the son of J. Sterling Morton, who started Arbor Day.
