Northerly Island is well known for its summer concerts, but less so for its winter attractions: from December to February, you can go cross-country skiing or snowshoeing on the 91-acre peninsula with a nice view of the skyline. And now that we’re actually getting some snow this winter—the minimum for skiing/snowshoeing is three inches, according to the Park District—you might actually be able to take advantage of it. Rentals are available from the field house ($5 for two hours) and parking is only a dollar an hour, probably the best rate in the city. Weather permitting, it’ll be open on the following dates: January 28-29 and February 4-5, 11-12, 19, and 25-26.
