The AIG Bailout In Less Than 30 Seconds
Inspired by a tweet from lit blogger (and former colleague) Mark Athitakis. Further reading: NYT, the Order of the Shrill, Naked Capitalism, Dean Baker, Felix Salmon, Brad DeLong, The Big Picture, and other fine econ blogs near you. Update: I finally realized why Omar whistles “The Farmer in the Dell.” It’s a nursery rhyme about […]
Econ Roundup: More Bad News
By all accounts, Lenise has no hope. Everyone has told her that she’s out of luck. Because she signed the order of possession, there’s no reversing it now. * Let’s start with some microeconomics – Megan Cottrell has an outstanding post about a Cabrini-Green resident who is facing homelessness after the confluence of a couple […]
How to fix a looming city budget apocalypse in two easy links
Sun-Times: “Chicago has a $519.7 million budget shortfall in 2010” Progress Illinois: “As we recently pointed out, a document released by the city last month shows that Daley’s 150-plus TIF districts ended 2008 with $1 billion in aggregate unspent funds.” Acronym you won’t find in either the Sun-Times’s or the Trib‘s articles on the 2010 […]

Steve Rhodes flags a report that Chicago is losing millionaires, down 16% to 172,000. Clearly, the answer is MOAR TIFS. Or maybe they’re migrating to Oak Park, as is recommended by the latest silly-ass pro-suburb finance magazine list. Don’t say that I didn’t warn you about the parking.
Tower-Which-Must-Not-Be-Named
Fortunately, the name change won’t affect the skyscraper’s architecture. But it will blur the skyscraper’s identity—and Chicago’s identity, too. Oh, please. Something about this reminds me of people who name their cars. It’s sort of cute but it’s also sort of creepy.
My continuing AIG obsession
The AIG rageohol bill that passed the House last week faces a rocky future, while the new toxic asset plan proposed by Tim Geithner faces an unclear present.
